Chapter Twenty-Two

With the tourists away in Pakistan, Grigor is worried about his tablet. He knows it contains illicit images and he’s worried about the consequences if it is found. He’s not sure if the ownership can be traced back to him. He remembers hiding it at Leppington and decides to break in late at night to recover it from the shoebox.

He parks safely well past the house and saunters back to make sure the property is vacant. He sneaks to the rear and breaks in by forcing the rear door. The search fails. Steve or Len must have taken it. He decides to break into their separate college rooms; he knows they too travelled to Pakistan. He does this later the same night, but this fails too. It’s close to sunrise now. In desperation he decides to break into Emma’s rental house. But still, he cannot find the tablet.

Driving home to Wallacia, the sun is up and he’s worrying about the prospects of the tablet getting into police hands because they would be able to bypass the security. He blames the phone call from Carlos for his problem with Gorski. That was a bad mistake too. But his own fault for dicing with him at the Club. On arriving home, he finds the others having breakfast, and he asks them if they knew about the tablet at Leppington. But it’s a mystery to them.

After breakfast he remembers Liana visiting Len, and then Emma, just prior to the grand final. So, he directs one of those staying with him, Kobe, to go to Khancoban and to search for the tablet. It could have been given to her either to hide or to use herself. Kobe grabs Husan and they leave straight away in one of the work vans. If they have to stay overnight, there is room in the back of the van for a quick nap. It’s a four-hour drive.

Liana’s life here in Australia is so different to that in Termez. There she was fully occupied doing either schoolwork, helping at the markets with other family members, or attending gymnastic classes where she excelled. Not long before migrating, she had competed at Tashkent in rhythmic gymnastics against some two hundred competitors and had secured a commendation. Back then, with Uncle Len away so much playing football, she used to long for the times he would return home and take her mountaineering. She knew she was his special family favourite.

Here in Khancoban, her mother has a full-time job and works long hours at the local café. For most of her home time now, Liana is with her great-grandparents, but today is their day to attend “Chat Club”, a social group popular with other older retired people, who meet once each month. Today is also her half-day off from school, to provide sport opportunities for some, free time for others.

On her way home from school, she is anticipating free time on her computer and to use the Internet to send and watch some Facebook photos and messages, enjoying the private time that she rarely gets.
